Beginning Genealogy Class

The Fulton Chapter is hosting two beginners workshops in October. The first is Wednesday, October 6, from 6-9 pm. The second is Saturday, October 15, from 10-2 pm. Both are at the Evergreen Public Library, Metamora, Ohio. Email Shelby Tipping, stipping@roadrunner.com for cost. Those who join the society will receive a 10% discount on dues!

Don't forget that you need to have your application in by December 31 to qualify by next year's banquet. One $25.00 fee covers any and all applications!

There are three categories:
First Families of Fulton County (must live in Fulton Co. before Dec 31 1860)
Centennial Families of Fulton County (must have lived in Fulton County at least 100 years before date of application)
Civil War Families of Fulton County (must have an ancestor or allied ancestor that fought in the Civil War and lived in Fulton County at some point in their life)

Finding Probate Records

The first step to finding wills and probate is determining where the records were filed. Probate is filed in the county courthouse or town hall where the deceased owned property or last resided—not necessarily where he died.

You'll find probate courts and records called by different names in different states. In New York, they're surrogates courts; Louisiana calls them succession records and puts them in district courts; and in Mississippi, wills are in chancery court.

Not all probate records are indexed, but if you can find an index online or in a book, you'll learn the estate settlement date and the probate packet's location in court records. Check the county or state archives website and run a place search of the Family History Library catalog on the county name, then click the Probate heading.

Do you have an ancestor who came to your county, or even Ohio, during its formative years? Or an ancestor who served in the Civil War? On May 11, 2010, at 7 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 410 Taylor Street, Delta, the Fulton County Genealogical Society presents, "Applying to a Lineage Society," by Nancy Dzierzawski. Ms. Dzierzawski is past president of the Fulton County Genealogical Society, and a member of several lineage societies. Currently, the society offers three different lineage programs for Fulton County members: First Families of Fulton County, Ohio, for those who can prove ancestry to an individual who lived in Fulton County prior to December 31, 1860; Civil War Families of Fulton County, Ohio, for those who can prove ancestry to an individual who served in the Civil War; and Centennial Families of Fulton County, Ohio, for those who can prove ancestry to an individual who had lived in Fulton County 100 years prior to the application date. The society also supports those who wish to join any of the four lineage societies offered by the Ohio Genealogical Society. Anyone interested in honoring their ancestors by joining a lineage society will want to attend this free program. Library:
We are happy to announce that at our last meeting our board approved an agreement to house our library at the Evergreen Library in Metamora Ohio. This agreement was also approved by the Evergreen library board and we officially have a new home! We will be moving our books into the library the week of May 19th. It will take us and the library staff a while to get them organized and shelved, so please don't go to the library yet to use them. I will let you all know when they are ready to go. Families news:
We have lowered the fee to become a member of Fulton County Families. You can now apply for membership in any (or all) of our Family categories for a flat rate/ one time fee of $25.00. Here is a little more info:

Any member of the Fulton County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society who is a direct descendent of an individual who settled in the area now encompassed by Fulton County, Ohio may become a member of:

~First Families of Fulton County, Ohio if their ancestor can be proved to have lived in Fulton County before 31, December 1860.

~Civil War Families of Fulton County Ohio if their ancestor can be proved to have served in the Civil War

and/or

~Centennial Families of Fulton County Ohio if their ancestor can be proved to have lived in Fulton County 100 years prior to their application.

This membership is dependant on the acceptance of an application with proof of such descent and the payment of a one time $25.00 application fee (which will apply to any or all categories applied for). December Meeting

Don't forget our annual Christmas Party/ December meeting this Tuesday, December 11 at 7pm. We will have a pot-luck desert and a white elephant/ gift auction. This year we have added a magazine exchange. Bring any genealogy related magazines that you are through with and exchange them for ones you haven't read. The only rule is that you must take home the same number that you bring!. We will also put our heads together and try to solve some of your brick walls. So round up your favorite desert, wrap up a gift to be auctioned off, pack up all those old magazines and bring them to our meeting at 7pm. This meeting is always lots of fun----see you there!

The poll that we did on the blog indicated that members want to see surnames and internet research help. So if you will send me the names you want posted and your favorite sites, we will get them on the blog. e-mail us at fcogs@comcast.net. I have two favorites to tell you about this month.

1) About.genealogy.com is not a research site per se, but has a lot of help and discussions about where to find info. I often go to it when I'm not sure where to research and want to find an article about my research problem.

2) Genealogy Guys is another one of my favorites. They have hour podcasts about genealogy you can download and then listen to on your i-pod or mp3 player. I download several and then listen to them on my way to work each day. I've gotten several good ideas from them. If you like books-on-tape (or CD) this might be just the thing for you.

Our November meeting is a field trip to the Recorder's office in Wauseon, Ohio. The meeting starts at 7pm in the County Administration Building. Enter the building using the back door from the parking lot.

The December meeting will be our annual Christmas Party...plus extras this year! Bring a dessert to pass and a wrapped “White Elephant” item to be auctioned. The meeting will be a round table discussion to help members break down their brick walls. We will also start our magazine exchange that evening. Bring any genealogy magazines you are done with and exchange them for ones you haven't read. Only rule is that you must take the same number home that you brought!

In actual numbers, African American soldiers comprised 10% of the entire Union Army. Losses among African Americans were high, and from all reported casualties, approximately one-third of all African Americans enrolled in the military lost their lives during the Civil War.

In June 1863, Ohio received permission from the secretary of war to organize separate black military units. The first of these was the 127th OVI, which later became the 5th Regiment of the U.S. Colored Troop. Clevelanders Gustavus W. Fahrion, Eilery C. Ford, and Frank J. Ford served as captains in the unit, which saw action in North Carolina and Virginia. The 5th USCI (United States Colored Infantry) from Ohio, Camp Delaware, served from July through November 1863 to September 20, 1865 in Carolina City, North Carolina. The Colored women, who followed the camp, served unofficially not in the shadows of these men, but as their support.

Hi, FCOGS Members...Welcome to our blog. This is an attempt on our part to keep all of our members informed. From time to time we will be posting info that is relevant to our society. We had our first meeting of the year last night. Our speaker, Shannon, talked about canal boats and the canal.....she is the canal boat captain at Grand Rapids. Next month we will have a program on the Buffalo Soldiers and November we will be taking a field trip to the court house in Wauseon.
